Alone in the rzerth burrow, I began to feel restless. Could I really do nothing but stay here and wait until this evening? A heavy sigh then escaped my lips as the realization that this really was the only course of action open to me. Res Publica would be watching any move I made so unless I had a good reason to leave, staying put was the safest option.
Lying down on the ground I began to mentally review everything I knew about Linda Devine’s murder hoping to discover something helpful. At least it was better than just waiting for the others to return. I began with the most basic assumption. The evidence so far points to Felix and/or Keros Curran as the murders of Linda Devine. They had managed somehow to find the anti-garden and from it retrieve a weapon capable of killing Little Dragons. Linda’s death allowed Felix to obtain sole authority over the Res Publica organization, and he appears to be destroying its very foundation for reasons we don't understand.
Although Ezekiel gave very compelling evidence that the anti-garden was more than just pseudoscience as I initially believed, even now I couldn’t quite see how something that powerful could just be found and hidden again. It just didn’t make sense to me. There was something we were missing. Mentally I began reviewing every theory I ever head about the garden.
When I was a physicist, I like my colleagues studied the garden at length. Although any Little Dragon could use it with ease, none of us truly understood it or the full extent of its capabilities. There are theories that the garden is said to have come into existence at the same time that life began, and it is interwoven in every aspect of the universe. Humanity as a whole, however, didn’t really become aware of the garden’s existence until after the first age of enlightenment. As our knowledge and biology changed to embrace an energetic state so did the garden become more of a presence in our daily lives. It is now believed that energy in all its forms originates and upon death returns to the garden. Thus Linda Devine’s death makes no sense because the weapon used to kill her made what she was to completely disappear! Something that should be impossible.
A new thought then came to me. What if Linda Devine’s energy didn’t vanish but was being held by the weapon. It was a pretty far out theory because I know of nothing powerful enough to hold a Little Dragon’s energy except for the garden. However, it made more sense than just abandoning centuries of accumulated knowledge on the nature of energy, specifically how it can only be changed never destroyed.
Could the anti-garden make something that powerful? Inwardly I immediately disregarded the notion because something deep down inside me couldn’t shake the feeling that the anti-garden was a myth. Something else was responsible for creating that weapon. Once again I began reviewing what I knew about the garden’s makeup recalling something I hadn’t considered.
Although safe for Little Dragons, there were parts of the garden that were off limits. Fortunately no one would go there of their own accord the energy vibrations are too intense even for us. There was one physicist, however, Julie Salmon, who theorized that if you could go beyond the vibrations you would reach what we call the garden’s fulcrum. Here, she stated, the creation energy would be a thousand times more powerful than anything we could accomplish on our own. Julie received permission to undergo an expedition to explore it but unfortunately once she reached the fulcrum her energy was reabsorbed by the garden. Either the garden simply took her apart or she was so overwhelmed by what she discovered giving up her life was the most sensible option. Since her attempt, no one has tried it again.
What if Felix and his father succeeded where Julie didn’t? They made it to the fulcrum without being unmade and created a weapon strong enough to kill Little Dragons. The more I thought about it the more probable it became. The fulcrum existed, and I could easily believe the energy held there could create something that was previously impossible to fathom. Could Julie Salmon’s theories have been fully realized by one or two others?
